Labor Day

Driving somewhere this weekend? If so, there’s good news for you at the gas pump. As Steve Gelsi writes in his story today, gas prices are lower than experts predicted earlier this year, though the national average is only a few cents lower than it was this time last year.

But gas prices are kind of like real estate. Location matters. So, it’s probably good I’m not driving anywhere this weekend. San Francisco’s prices are still at about $3.20 a gallon.

Read Gelsi’s story for more on the gas-price outlook, plus don’t miss Lew Sichelman’s Realty Q&A column on why it’s not a good idea to tap your retirement savings to pay off your mortgage, and Robert Powell’s column on a strange provision in the health-care reform law that gives health-care cost subsidies to younger retirees — those who aren’t yet eligible for Medicare — but only some of those retirees, and only for a relatively short period of time.

Wishing you all a happy Labor Day weekend!

We found a product that we thought would be perfect for a bride going on a honeymoon to a beach or even having a beach destination wedding. They are flip flops with exchangeable straps called Switchflops® . The straps are secured with velcro and cost $10 each.

How cute would it be to wear your flip flops with a different color and patterned strap every day on your honeymoon with each different outfit. Or even buy a pair for your bridesmaids to wear.

Rachel Wade

Sarah Ludemann

CLEARWATER, Fla. (CBS/WTSP) Rachel Wade, the teenage girl who murdered her romantic rival, Sarah Ludemann, was sentenced Friday in a Florida courtroom to 27 years in prison.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Judge Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Joseph A. Bulone said that Wade had “caused a lot of pain” before handing down the sentence.

Wade, now 20, was found guilty of second-degree murder on July 23. The jury deliberated for less than three hours, before siding with prosecutors, who argued that Wade had murdered the 18-year-old Ludemann in April 2009 because the two were involved with same young man, Joshua Camacho.

The state maintained that Wade murdered her nemesis, then sat back as Ludemann was dying and asked Pinellas Park police officers for a cigarette.

Prosecutor Wesley Dicus described the stabbing as so violent that the knife blade was bent.

Wade’s attorney, Jay Hebert, maintained that his client acted in self defense,  saying that on the night of the murder, Ludemann and her friends were on their way to “jump” Wade. Months and months of vicious taunts and bickering came to a head, he explained, and it was Ludemann, not Wade, who started the fatal fight.

During his closing argument, Hebert told the jury, “Sarah was the aggressor. They couldn’t stop her. She went looking for Rachel that night.”

Wade and Ludemann were both dating the same young man in a twisted and drama-filled love triangle that lasted for months.

There had been numerous confrontations between the girls.

The most damning evidence from the trial was a collection of threatening voice mail messages from Rachel to Sarah.

Rachel is heard saying, “Please tell me Sarah why you would be a dumb-a** c**t and put a brand new picture of you and Josh at the beach on your MySpace. Seriously, I told you to watch your f***ing back and not to f***ing chill with him. I’m guaranteeing you that I’m going to f***ing murder you, I’m letting you know that now.”

The jury fell silent after the messages were played in court, and Rachel began crying.

UPS Plane Crash

UPS Plane on Fire

There’s been a plane crash in Dubai today involving a UPS 747 cargo plane which came down just after takeoff. Sadly the two crew aboard the plane are believed dead.

It appears from witness accounts that a large portion of the plane was on fire before the crash and the United Arab Emirates civil aviation authority now reports that the bodies of the 2 crew involved have been recovered, according to msn.com.

Kristen Petrella, a UPS spokeswoman said that the plane came down around 8:00 pm local time. The Flight 6 Boeing 747-400 was headed to Cologne in Germany but crashed only 10 miles southeast of Dubai’s international airport in an Emirati air base close to a highway intersection.

There was an account from an Associated Press photographer that the crash could not be seen from the highway as there were walls separating the site but smoke could be seen at the crash spot.

Demonizing Alex Jones

Alex-Jones

Last night on ABC’s Nightline, Dan Harris tried to discredit Alex Jones and make him out as a charming kook.

“Jones, who sits at the helm of an independent media empire, is arguably the nation’s premiere purveyor of what could be called paranoia porn,” Harris writes in an article posted on ABC’s website. “People who monitor hate groups say they’re extremely worried about Jones’ growing influence. His six-day-a-week radio show and webcast reach an estimated one million people a day.” Harris says “Jones’ critics say that by floating his highly-charged ideas at a time when the nation is already very angry and anxious, he’s upping the odds for unbalanced people to do stupid things.”

Stupid things. For instance, storming a television network like James Lee did earlier this week. James Lee, the gunman ultimately taken out by a police SWAT team, was a psychotic environmentalist and fan of eugenics who believed children are no different than an infestation of cockroaches. If we use Harris’ logic, the corporate media is responsible for spreading “highly-charged ideas” with its non-stop propaganda about the debunked theory of climate change and over population. Such sensationalism has increased “the odds for unbalanced people to do stupid things.”

In the Nightline piece, Harris fumbled in his effort to characterize Jones as a conspiracy nut after Jones pointed out the obvious — the global elite are establishing world government. ABC and the corporate media have reported on this fact numerous times. Jones showed Harris and ABC documentation of this fact, but it ended up on the cutting room floor because the point of the Nightline segment is not to present objective facts, but portray Jones as a dangerous conspiracy kook.

Oil Rig Explosion

Despite earlier reports, there is no evidence of an oil sheen, said U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Peter Troedsson, adding there were no visible leaks.

“We continue to investigate and to monitor that situation,” he said at a news conference.

The vessel the Vermilion Oil Rig 380 was engulfed in flames Thursday morning about 100 miles off the central coast of Louisiana. The fire forced its 13 crew members into the water. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said they were doing maintenance.

A well connected to an oil and gas production platform caught on fire Thursday, engulfing the vessel in flames about 100 miles off the central coast of Louisiana and forcing 13 people overboard, Gov. Bobby Jindal said Thursday.

All 13 people have been accounted for, said Petty Officer Bill Colclough of the Coast Guard. Mariner Energy, which owns the Vermilion Oil Rig 380, said none of the crew members was hurt in the incident, despite earlier reports of a single injured worker.

Miss Universe 2010 Top 15

Miss Universe 2010 Top 15

Miss Universe 2010 Top 15:Eighty three Miss Universe contestants are competing for the Miss Universe 2010 Title. Last Thursday was the preliminary presentation held in Malanday Bay Resort in Las Vegas where the Top 15 Miss Universe 2010 has been selected.

However, the lucky semi-finalist will be announced on August 22, 2010 Pacific Standard Time (August 23, 2010 in the Philippines). Miss Universe 2010 contestants was rated based on evening gown category and swimsuit category during the preliminary presentation.

Miss Philippines Maria Venus Raj was one of the most applauded contestants during the event. Maria Venus Raj’s closest rivals during the show based on the most cheered beauties were Miss Haiti, Miss Canada, Miss Australia, Miss USA, Miss Mexico and Miss Puerto Rico.

On the online survey based on the official website of the Miss Universe. Maria Venus Raj got the highest rating followed by Miss Bolivia Claudia Lemaitre and Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson on the third spot. This online popularity survey will have no bearing on the preliminaries and during the finals according to the Miss Universe organizers.

A statement issued by Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, read: “As disclosed at the top of each broadcast, members of the Miss Universe Organization play a role in the selection of the Top 15 semi-finalists. In the 2009 Miss Universe competition, a preliminary panel of judges selected nine of the Top 15 and members of the Miss Universe Organization, including owner Donald J. Trump, selected the remaining six;

“A separate panel of judges, introduced live at the Finals telecast, is solely responsible for the selection of the Top 10, Top 5 and the ultimate winner of the pageant. This system has been in place since 2005 and has always been fully disclosed to the contestants, their directors, the judges and the viewing audience;

“The procedure is overseen by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young and NBC Program Standards and Compliance. To in any way call into question the integrity of the judging process or suggest the pageant is somehow orchestrated or ‘rigged’ is utterly false and misleading.”

“When I bought Miss Universe 12 years ago, it was a sick puppy. Now the Miss Universe contest is seen in over 180 countries around the world and the ratings are through the roof and that’s because of the beautiful women,” said Trump. “I’m not changing a thing!”

Salmonella Egg Recall

Salmonella Egg Recall

Salmonella Egg Recall:Aug. 23, 2010 — As the nation’s largest egg recall continues, the FDA investigation is focusing on the huge egg farms in Iowa owned by Austin “Jack” DeCoster.

The CDC continues to receive new reports of salmonella illness from the strain of the bacteria implicated in the egg recall. Since May, there have been about 1,300 more confirmed cases of food poisoning with this strain than are usual for this time of year. The CDC estimates that for every reported case there are 30 to 38 unreported illnesses.

Some of these illnesses have been traced to eggs from two egg production facilities in Iowa. The parent company of both firms is Quality Eggs, one of several companies owned by DeCoster.

“We have more than 20 investigators on the ground in Iowa. We are evaluating potential causes of contamination at farms associated with the salmonella outbreak,” FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD, said today at a news teleconference.

The contamination could come from several sources. But Jeff Farrar, DVM, PhD, MPH, the FDA’s associate commissioner for food protection, said that the Quality Eggs facilities received their chicks from a Minnesota firm certified to be free of salmonella.

If the chicks did not bring the salmonella with them, then they may have picked up salmonella at the Quality Eggs facility. The source could be contaminated feed — and Farrar said Quality Egg is the source of the feed used on the farms to which the contaminated eggs were traced. Rodents and other pests, lax environmental controls, or other mishaps could also be sources of contamination.

To date, Farrar said, FDA investigators have not isolated salmonella from the suspected facilities. However, he noted that most of these tests are not yet complete. When they are — perhaps later this week — the FDA will issue the first of its official inspection reports.

The recalled eggs are packaged under a wide range of brand names. An updated list is on the FDA foodsafety.gov web site. But some of the eggs were distributed as loose eggs and may have been repackaged under different brand names. Farrar said it’s likely that new “sub-recalls” will go out as investigators learn of these repackaged brands.

So far, eggs have been recalled in 22 states.

Christopher R. Braden, MD, acting director of the CDC’s division of food-borne diseases, said some states have reported hundreds of cases.

Since the recall began, the CDC has not identified any new clusters of salmonella cases — that is, people who got sick after eating at the same restaurant or attending the same event.

“Some of these illnesses could have sources other than eggs. The issue is determining who is part of the outbreak and who is not. That can be difficult,” Braden said.
